Couples, Haas share Champions Tour lead

U.S. Presidents Cup captain Fred Couples shot a 3-under 68 for a share of the lead with assistant captain Jay Haas after the first round of the Champions Tour’s season-ending Charles Schwab Championship on

Thursday.

Couples, coming off a victory three weeks ago in San Antonio, had six birdies and three bogeys at TPC Harding Park, the site of the United States’ 2009 Presidents Cup victory in his first year as captain.
Haas had four birdies and a bogey.

David Frost and Michael Allen were a stroke back and Charles Schwab Cup points leader Tom Lehman matched Kenny Perry and Rod Spittle at 70.
For the past few weeks, Couples has been dogged by questions about his decision to include Tiger Woods on the American team that will play at Royal Melbourne later this month. The questions continued after

his round on

“In my mind some of it’s very serious and some of it is comical because it just keeps going,” said Couples, who guaranteed Woods a spot weeks before his captain’s picks were due.
“We have 11 other guys on the team. But it seems like it’s all about Tiger. I’ve picked him and we’ll wait until we get to Australia and we’ll see how he plays.”
Couples, a two-time winner on tour this season, got off to a quick start with birdies on five of the first nine holes and held a two-stroke lead midway through the back nine before running into trouble in the wet,

windy conditions.
He bogeyed Nos. 13 and 14 — both par 4s — then added another bogey on the 17th to fall a stroke behind Haas. He recovered on the 18th with a 10-foot birdie putt to regain a share of the lead.
“I didn’t dominate the golf course, but I drove it well and I made some of the holes seem easier,” Couples said. “Today (the weather) was not really that bad. It was more of a nuisance.”
Haas, whose only victory this season came at the 3M Championship in Minnesota in late July, had a more consistent round. His only stumble came on the par-3 11th when he flew over the green with his tee shot.
Haas made up for it with birdies on 16 and 17 to take a brief one-stroke lead.
“It was a difficult day out there,” Haas said. “The rain is not as bad as the rain and the wind. It was a two- or three-club turnaround wind basically on most holes.”
The bad weather kept the scores high. Only seven of the 30 players broke par on the picturesque course.
Lehman, attempting to become the first to win player of the year honors on the PGA, Nationwide and Champion tours, repeatedly struggled with his approach shots and had only two birdies.
Mark Calcavecchia, second in points behind Lehman, had an even rougher afternoon. He had five birdies but two double bogeys — one on the par-3 third — en route to a 71.
Frost eagled the 525-yard par-5 ninth, then birdied No. 10 to get to 5 under, but dropped back with bogeys on Nos. 11, 1

NFL, players courting favor

MINNEAPOLIS — A day after US District Court Judge Susan Richard Nelson urged both sides to return “to the table,’’ National Football League owners and players sent letters to each other and the court that amounted to public relations moves, but nothing of substance.

Yahoo! BuzzShareThis
The only way it appears any real talks would commence is if Nelson steps in and brokers a deal, because both sides remain firmly entrenched in how they would be open to reaching an agreement.
“This is a very good time for you to come back to the table,’’ Nelson said Wednesday. “Not to the union table, not to the players’ table, but to the federal court table, which is in the middle. Let’s say neutral table, if you will. It fully protects you in every way from any consequences and this is really a matter which should be resolved, in my view.
“And I do hope that both sides will consider utilizing the services of the federal court to sit down in the meantime and try to resolve the case. If there’s any interest in that, I’m glad to facilitate any suggestions you have.’’
The NFL Players Association, whose decertification and Brady v. NFL antitrust lawsuit caused the negotiations to move into court, jumped at the chance to agree to Nelson’s proposal of settlement.
“We take your comments regarding protecting the parties’ positions to heart,’’ the letter read. “As class counsel on behalf of the Brady class, we think this is an excellent suggestion and are prepared to engage in such mediation without delay.’’
The NFL has repeatedly said it does not want to settle the case. Doing so would keep the next CBA under the auspices of the federal courts, which can be an expensive and lengthy process. The NFL instead wants to bargain a new deal — in front of a mediator — so that third-party arbiters can be used to resolve disputes, like the other major sports.
“Our letter to the players’ attorneys proposes negotiations with owner involvement under the supervision of Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service Director George Cohen,’’ the NFL said in a statement. “A copy has been sent to Judge Nelson. The goal of the discussions would be to resolve all outstanding issues and achieve a global resolution. As part of our proposal, we offered to give the players assurances that they will not compromise any legal position as a result of the discussions.’’
The last part — offering the union to stay disbanded while mediation commenced — was a point of appeasement by the owners. But the NFLPA believes negotiation is a delay tactic by the NFL to keep the lockout in place.
“There’s nothing good at the bargaining table,’’ NFLPA counsel Jim Quinn told Nelson Wednesday. “We did that for 2 1/2 years. It didn’t work out.’’
Unless Nelson steps in with an order from the bench, both sides are going to wait for her to rule.
After all the questions she raised against the league’s case, the NFLPA has to feel confident Nelson will block the lockout, so there’s no point in giving back anything in negotiations.
The NFL likely feels better about its chances in front of the more conservative Eighth Circuit Court in St. Louis.
So, nothing has really changed.

Minnesota Vikings Head Coach Watches Son at Rice

HOUSTON – Twenty-four hours after wrapping up his duties at the NFL meetings in New Orleans, Minnesota Vikings Head Coach Leslie Frazier took the short flight to Houston to watch his son during spring workouts Wednesday at Rice University.
Corey Frazier is a starting safety on the Owls football team.
The Vikings head coach said even if the lockout in the NFL didn’t exist, he would have made the trip.
“I probably would have been able to do it anyway this week,” Leslie Frazier said in an interview with FOX 26 Sports.
“The fact that the owners meetings were in New Orleans, which is such a short hop away from here, made it a little bit easier. (Thursday) I have to head out and get back to Minnesota, but for this one day this will be the hilight of the week and the year, just to be able to watch him practice.”
And to make things sweeter for the family: Leslie’s wife, Gale, made the trip with him.
“For both of us to be able to be here together to watch Corey in practice, I don’t get a chance to do it very often,” Leslie Frazier said. “So it’s a great time for me.”
It was a big day for Corey Frazier as well.
“It’s a blessing,” Corey Frazier said. “I’m glad he could make it out here to check me out. It’s so rare that he can. It’s exciting. I’ll get some feedback from him.”
When Leslie Frazier was named the interim head coach of the Vikings last year, a job he now has on a permanent basis, his son was beaming from ear to ear.
“As proud as Corey was for me, I’m so proud of him,” Leslie Frazier said. “What he’s been able to do here academically knowing how demanding Rice is academically.”
“To see him work as hard as he’s working and then to continue to improve as a football player and to keep himself clean when it comes to character issues, he makes his mom and I extremely, extremely proud of him.”
All of that is music to Corey’s ears.
“That makes me proud to know that they go around telling their friends and other coaches that I go to Rice and what kind of educational school it is,” Corey Frazier said. “That makes me pretty proud.”
Clearly Corey’s parents set the tone for the kind of man he has become off the football field as well as on.
“That’s everything,” Leslie Frazier said. “Our legacy is not complete unless our kids can look at their mom and dad and say ‘you know what those are my role models’.”

Celtics break losing streak, set NBA record

On Sunday, March 13, 2011, the Boston Celtics set a new defensive record in the NBA.
During the first half of regulation, the Celt’s held the Milwaukee Bucks to an NBA-record 22 points. The previous record was 25.
Bucks coach Scott Skiles said, “that’s about as humiliating a defeat as you’ll ever see.” Not only did the Celtics play phenomenal defense, but Milwaukee was awful from the field. In fact, the Bucks shot 22-70, and missed all 8 of their first 3-point shot attempts.
Ray Allen, the all-time 3-point leader, has been known for his offensive skills throughout the years and his nearly flawless shooting form. On Sunday, Allen had a great defensive game and helped the team shut down every player on the Bucks.
“I think playing defense perfectly is our goal,” said Allen. “That’s what we shoot for, but a team can still score while you’re doing that.” All of the Celtics second string players got a great amount of playing time in the fourth quarter, and some new “heroes” emerged on the team. Recently acquired Jeff Green and Troy Murphy combined for 23 points and 10 rebounds, while newcomer Nenad Krstic had 11 points and 14 rebounds alone.
On a side note, the Bucks had more turnovers in the first half of the game (9) than they did field goals (8). Talk about a bad day for the Bucks. They will play their next game Tuesday, March 15, 2011, in Atlanta while the C’s will play at the New Jersey Nets tonight, March 14, 2011, at 7PM.

WCG Chicago Bears Draft Board: Defensive Tackle (Updated)

No surprise that Tommie Harris got released yesterday. Since 2007, Tommie Harris hasn’t had a significant season and every summer it was always “if Tommie Harris is healthy he can be this” or “if Tommie Harris is healthy, this defense will be top 5″. I’m glad I got to saw Tommie Harris dominate for 3 seasons, but I like many fans felt it was time to move on. The release of Harris certainly solidified DT as a top need. Yes the Bears have Anthony Adams (assuming he re-signs), Matt Toeaina, and Henry Melton, but 2 are NT’s and 1 is a situational pass rushing DT. The Bears need that dominant disruptive force from the 3 technique to make this defensive line go.

With the defensive tackles finishing up their combine performance over the weekend, this week I will update my defensive tackle rankings.

#1 Nick Fairley Auburn (6-4 291 pounds) – I almost put Marcell Dareus #1, but I have to stick with Fairley just based off the 2010 season.
#2 Marcell Dareus Alabama (6-3 319 pounds) – Dareus is maybe my favorite defensive tackle in this draft. The man can play in both the 4-3 and 3-4, and is extremely athletic for his size (4.92 40 at the combine).

#3 Cory Liuget Illinois (6-2 298 pounds) – 50/50 chance that Liuget falls to us at #29, with teams like St. Louis and Philadelphia picking ahead of us. If Liuget falls to #29 and the top tackles are off the board, I would think that he will be the pick to fill the DT void.

#4 Muhammad Wilkerson Temple- Wikerson is a pure 5 technique tackle in the 3-4, and I expect him not to be on the Bears radar.

#5 Phil Taylor Baylor-  Taylor wouldn’t fill out his full potential as a 3 technique tackle, but instead as a 3-4 NT.

#6 Drake Nevis LSU- Nevis is still one of my favorite 4-3 tackle prospects in this year’s draft. He has great explosion off the line of scrimmage particularly because he is quick. The problem with Nevis is, can he be a 3 down tackle and not just a rotation tackle because of his size.
#7 Stephen Paea Oregon State- Paea has moved up my draft board with his performance at the combine. Once he’s healthy, I think he can be a pretty good 3 technique with a 4-3 team.

#8 Marvin Austin North Carolina- The only thing that is dragging Austin down is character concerns because he’s an extremely talented athlete.

#9 Jarvis Jenkins Clemson- Another 3-4 player that most likely won’t be on the Bears radar.

#10 Jurrell Casey USC- Was once consider a 1st round prospect by many mock draft analysis, Casey has seen his stock drastically fallen the past couple months all the way to the 4th round.

#11 Lawrence Guy Arizona State- Guy athleticism and size makes him an intriguing prospect for 3-4 teams looking for a 5 technique tackle.

#12 Terrell McClain South Florida- Underrated prospect who performed well during drills at the combine.

#13 Sione Fua Stanford- Pure Nose Tackle that could be on the radar of the Bears if they don’t plan on re-signing Adams.

#14 Kendrick Ellis Hampton- Another pure Nose Tackle, but Ellis has great physical talent that just needs to be coached up.

#15 Ladi Ajiboye South Carolina- Late round tackle, that is most likely a developmental project at the next level.

Mock DT pick for the Bears Marvin Austin North Carolina

I make this pick because I feel either OT Gabe Carimi or Derrick Sherrod will fall to us with the 1st round pick. Austin, Paea, or Nevis will fall to us in the 2nd round and either one will be solid picks, but Austin has the most potential of the three. I also make this pick because I feel Marinelli can really coach Austin up in that 3 technique defensive tackle position and Austin will respond to a firey motivational coach like Marinelli. If Rod Marinelli can accomplish this, it will most certainly be a huge steal for the Bears in round 2.

Vick uses ‘careful consideration’ in canceling Oprah interview

Michael Vick(notes) said he used “careful consideration” in making the decision to cancel an interview with Oprah Winfrey that was to happen on Thursday.

According to USA Today, Vick’s people called Tuesday night to cancel the interview. It was supposed to air Feb. 24.

“After careful consideration, I will need to postpone the taping of the Oprah Winfrey interview scheduled for February 22. I admire and respect Oprah and hope to be able to participate in an interview in the future,” Vick said in a statement, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer.

The NFL’s comeback player of the year has been hailed for his return from a prison stint. USA Today speculates that Vick may have canceled the appearance after a situation in Dallas during the week of Super Bowl XLV. Radio host Richard Hunter, who adopted one of the dogs rescued from Vick’s dogfighting operation, approached Vick with a photo of the dog.

Per the report, Hunter was cursed at by members of Vick’s entourage and told, “We don’t care about the dog.”

But short of some poorly planned parties last summer, Vick has done a fine job keeping himself out of bad situations.

There are no plans right now for a rescheduled Vick interview with Winfrey.
